Why You Should Visit a Forested Nordic Spa

Solace Organic Spa sits on the quiet south end of Salt Spring Island, tucked into the trees near Fulford Harbour. This coastal hidden gem is the perfect private oasis for relaxation, just a 20-30 minute ferry from nearby Vancouver Island.

What draws many guests here is the Forest Hydrotherapy Circuit, a private Nordic spa experience that was designed with intention in 2019 as an extension of Solace’s holistic massage & spa treatments, established on Salt Spring Island in 2004. Long before cold plunges became a wellness trend, Solace has been offering nature-focused, personalized spa experiences for individuals, couples and groups.

The Nordic Spa Ritual, For Those Who Haven’t Tried It

This therapeutic circuit is rooted in Scandinavian tradition; heat the body, cool it sharply, rest and repeat. It sounds simple because it is, and that simplicity is part of why it works so well.

At Solace, the Forest Hydrotherapy Circuit experience includes a cedar hot tub, a sauna and a cold plunge pool surrounded by nature. Between rounds, you’re able to rest in our covered forest lounge where you’re free to read, meditate or simply take in your surroundings.

This experience prompts your body to repeatedly adapt until it remembers its systems’ natural capabilities. By the end, guests experience improved circulation and endorphin release as well as reduced muscle tension.

What Sets Hydrotherapy at Solace Apart

Nordic spas are certainly more common in North America than they used to be and are quite lovely. Most are also shared spaces, which means you’re trying to reset, rest and reflect surrounded by strangers.

At Solace, the circuit is entirely private. You can book it for just yourself or a group, and it belongs to you for the full session; no one else is in the water, sauna, hot tub or lounge. This makes a meaningful difference, the kind you feel immediately upon arrival and think about for a long time after.

Salt Spring itself adds something that can’t be designed or manufactured. The island has a particular quality of quiet and slowness, as well as organic nature, not just creation or replication of a nature theme.

What to Know Before You Go

Robes, towels, slippers, and organic skincare products are all provided. The circuit is clothing-optional, though many guests prefer to bring a swimsuit.

Sessions run from 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the time of day and if you’re visiting solo or with a partner, friend group or party. You can also pair your hydrotherapy circuit with a massage through one of our separate Spa Journeys, or come just for the circuit and let the forest do the rest.
