What is your favourite aspect of working at Solace?

There are many aspects I enjoy about coming into work at Solace. However  My favorite part of the day to day experience  is being fully immersed in a session with a client and the deep state of listening and presence that occurs. It is with this practice of mindfulness I can best support a client’s needs and relaxation when they come into the spa.

Why did you choose a career in massage and spa therapies?

Yoga, movement and dance have been great teachers for me on my path of self discovery and healing. The body is complex and simple, receiving bodywork is so very nourishing. I believe receiving bodywork can support us physically, emotionally and beyond. To be in service in a way that is simple and profound is a gift. May all beings be held in ways that support life, I believe bodywork pays homage to life.

Sarah Maude Dubuc-Demers

Certified Esalen® Massage, CranioSacral, Pre Natal & Spa Therapist

What guides my practice?

I have been incredibly fortunate to study at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. My classroom was located on a cliff side overlooking the ocean. Right bellow the massage rooms, which consisted mostly of glass, the waves were crashing on the shore. Otters and whales splashing on the horizon. Breathtaking sunsets every night and skies flooded with stars were my daily teachers. The gardens were filled with flowers and monarchs. There was no doubt to me of how sacred this land is. And that beauty is healing, and that is nature’s purest expression.

I often found myself massaging to the rhythm of the crashing waves. My hands moving like water.  I found the ocean and the land to be my most potent teacher on how to listen. How to follow currents of energy moving through the body. How to trust nature’s profound intelligence, the one that runs through my hand and the breath, the same one that guides whales and butterflies across the ocean.

I also learnt from these teachers that loving awareness is one of the most healing forces and all beings and creatures long for it. When we step back as a loving witness, we become as brilliant as nature and harmony begins occurring.

What is a modality you specialize in?

Craniosacral. Craniosacral is an incredibly subtle yet powerful practice that focuses on assisting the body’s innate intelligence towards wellness and harmony. For this reason, this practice is very non-intrusive, meaning that nothing is forced during a session. This way, we can access the deeper and more subtle systems of the body such as the nervous system, the bones of the skull and the Craniosacral rhythm and fluids that pulse through the spine and brain every 3 to 6 seconds. Those systems cannot be reached through more forceful maneuvers since the muscles of the body would engage in response and protect these more sensitive systems of the body.

As a practitioner, my intention is to be a loving and compassionate witness to the body, to listen deeply and offer support to the shifts that want to occur.
A Craniosacral session consists mostly of very light holds on different parts of the body where I can sense the Craniosacral pulse of the client and encourage movement in areas of stagnation and holding.

Effects of this practice may include a nourished, relaxed and strengthened nervous system, relief with migraines and headaches as well as mental and emotional health resilience.

Sarah’s Daily Meditation

Sarah’s Daily Meditation

Closing your eyes gently.

Find refuge in the darkness behind your eyelids.

Notice the softness of your breath, coming in and out.

Releasing effort, become a loving witness to your miraculous aliveness.

Your body an ocean of breath and sensations.

Notice the temperature of your body. The air and clothes touching your skin. The way the earth supports you. Allowing tensions to melt into the earth and surrendering to the support.

Take in three deep inhales, and long exhales, softening a much as you can.

Now bring your awareness into your heart, and noticing how that feels.

Take a few moments here, listening and feeling with curiosity.

Does it feel warm, vast, open or contracted, numb?

Allow and welcome anything that surface with kindness and witness if anything changes.

Now see if there anything in your life that makes you feel grateful to be alive today.

It can be something very small and simple, or something big.

Take the time to name it and honour, and allow gratitude to permeate your tissues.

You can see a golden light starting to fill your bones and extending into your organs, muscles, tissues and beyond your body as far and wide as you wish.

See this as a warm, benevolent and loving energy bring healing to anything it touches.

Allow yourself to marinate in the feeling for as long as you can.

When this feels complete, think about the day ahead of you and one intention you’d like to carry as a prayer or anchor throughout your day. I invite you to pause throughout your day and remember this intention.

What is a modality you specialize in?

I love Reflexology. I love that it benefits the whole body in a subtle non-invasive effective way to improve circulation, to calm the central nervous system and assist in creating homeostasis. I love that it reminds me of how brilliantly our bodies are designed with their own natural resilience built in. I love that there are thousands of nerve endings in our hands and feet and that by effectively working on points that have been mapped out for thousands of years that this can provide great comfort and relief. Simply put, reflexology is on point for your whole body bliss.
